A new life in Alaska, a massive aurora, a spaceship hidden under the ice and snow…
For Hawk and Zach Callahan, getting to the small town of Salmon Run presents the first challenge. From the moment they arrive the locals freely share their opinions. While still in Cordova an old prospector declares the two cheechakos unprepared for the realities of an Alaskan winter and goes about fixing it. A failed sled-dog takes an unwelcome liking to Hawk, giving rise to an old phobia. The young native Sasha attaches herself to Zach, much to his disgust. They think they have it made when they board the unique train that will take them through a dark roadless wilderness to their new home.
The same night a massive display of the Aurora Borealis lights up the sky.
Resulting in the Solar Express train powering down all by itself, stranding its passengers.
Only, the energetic aurora affected something else out in the wilderness.
Welcome to Salmon Run, Alaska! A place of wild animals, wild lands, and wild inhabitants...oh, and native legends come alive and an interplanetary alien conflict at their backdoor. A fun contemporary science fiction series for teens, young adults, and adults of all ages.

Night of the Aurora Salmon Run Book 1 eBook JA Marlow
I enjoyed the story, but it was pretty short; more of a prelude or setting up of the story than a full book I think the series has promise, but for one aspect. The story begins with Zach Callahan and his dad, Hawk, arriving in Alaska; vague hints are given about their previous life, but the story is very much focused on the details (minutiae almost) of getting them from the ferry they arrived on, to their new home a few miles away - a lodge, in the wilds of Alaska, that they've inherited from an uncle. Hints are continually dropped about what the natives think about Salmon Run Lodge, but we never do find out why they make those comments.... And Zach and his new friend Sasha, a young native girl, have an adventure on the way to the Lodge, which sets up another aspect of future books, I would imagine. As I mentioned, the story is very short; mostly a setup for books to come - but it kept my interest with the promise of fun things to come - although those 'fun things' were not fully reached in this first book - just more hints and more questions.
I would rate 4 stars for the writing and the story premise; sounds like it will be interesting once it gets going, but I would give only 1 star for the cost of the sequel books; they are priced too high. This first book is free, which is why I tried out this new-to-me author, but the rest of the books in the series are $4 each, and only have a few more than 100 pages in each one (average of around 140 pages), as far as I could see with a quick perusal. After some looking around, I did see that there was a 'collection' of the first three books in this series for $6, which I think is still too much for only 300 or so pages, but I bought it and will hope to enjoy it. Bottom line is that, at the prices listed for the rest of the series, I won't be buying any more of them - darn. I will put this series and some of the other books by this author, on my 'books to check on' list and see if the prices come down at some point.
I also quickly looked over some of the author's other series and books and they look interesting, but I am not likely to try them either at the prices at which they are listed - $5 - $7 for around 350 pages each.

Night of the Aurora Salmon Run Book 1 eBook JA Marlow Reviews
I have not finished this book and I'm not sure if I'll try to find the effort to do so? Perhaps I will change my mind about this book if I can find a way to make it to the end.
At first I thought the book was a nice gentle read for a quiet day. A book in great need of a couple of rewrites, with bogged down, confusing descriptions but good enough to plow along, more of a lacking YA book or a confused comedy.
Now it has turned into a mind-numbing children's book that would never hold a child's attention.
As I said, I "may" wade through some more pages and find the book more palatable, but for now I'm in dire need for something else to read.
Marlow, had a doable story line at the start. If he had kept the book in one category and took the time to do more rewrites, he may have had an enjoyable story.
I read this book in a very short amount of time. It was a quick and easy read that also kept my attention through the whole book. I thought it did seem a bit rushed in some spots though, like there could have been a bit more time taken to elaborate on some things or make it more dramatic or adventuresome. The plot was good and seemed to be thought out pretty well. It did have that classic feel of a "part of a series" book though, not that it's a bad thing, just that you knew the end of the book was coming and there were still things you were wondering about. The characters were also great in this book. I liked the feel of the small town characters and how they all just wanted to help Hawk and Zach adapt and try to make it through an Alaskan winter. I liked how Marlow brought in the real weather of Alaska and settings in Alaska to the book. I thought it made it seem more realistic and able to relate to the characters and place. I will probably look for and read the following books in this series, but I don't think I would pay much for them if anything. I liked the book, I just felt it wasn't that much of an edge of your seat read that I just "can't wait" to read on in the series. My interest was peaked at some of the things that were not fully resolved though in this first book, so I would like to read on at some point to see where it all goes and if Zach and Hawk make it through their first Alaskan winter and can make it go with their crazy Uncle's place. Also, I would love to read on to see what happens with the aliens, that was a pretty neat twist to the story and mystery.
Interesting enough to read and to read on eventually in the series, but a bit rushed at times too. All in all a pretty decent book for a first in a series.
4/5 Stars!
I appreciated this book because, not only was it full of enough action to keep you interested, it had some human depth. You get to know the people and they are real...even the teens, which I find is a tough one because adult writing books don't understand teens, and teens writing books - well, I honestly haven't read any recently.
I won't repeat the story and setting for you - the description and other reviews are accurate. This is a complete book. If you read it, and never read another book in the series, you won't be missing any story line. That's my favorite part - it's not a cliff-hanger. However, you are going to want to read the next book, just because this one is well written, with good grammar (that's important to me...poor grammar really detracts from a book) and an interesting storyline. I've already read the 2nd book at the time I'm writing this review, and the review for that will be a copy of this one!
OH, and the only reason I gave it a 4 star instead of 5 star is - the book isn't one of your epic reads that you'll be remembering the rest of your life. It's excellent, but it's low tone and gentle. Very few (probably 5 in my lifetime) fit into the "epic books" section for me. So, 4 start might be your 5 star.
